New Rule

tv batman movie
When television first came out, film was the king. Now it makes sense to make films from television because we know so much about the subject.
New Rule: If you’re going to insist on making movies based on crappy, old television shows, then you have to give everyone in the Cineplex a remote so we can see what’s playing on the other screens. The reason something was a television show in the first place is that the idea wasn’t good enough to be a movie.

Evil

tv the biggest loser ryan benson
Eat less, exercise more. But maybe not The Biggest Loser regime.

Everyone who had done this workout said it hurt, I took a look at it the other day and though “sure I can do that” - yeah right! The Biggest Loser Workout is officially evil! I hate it and I love it all at the same time and that was just LOW impact cardio. The lunges, the squats, the the everything, it hurts. Goodness knows what the neighbours were thinking because they were some very strange noises and a fair few cuss words coming from my direction, especially during the squats. When he makes you stay low and hold your hands out in front of you for like an hour lol. I have never yelled so much at the TV in my life. The upside? I was in so much agony I didn’t notice that I’d done 30 minutes exercise! Woohoo! I feel good. Now it’s over with.

Law School

tv boston legal law school
Might want to ask a lawyer what it's really like being a lawyer.

Sometimes, I think about going into law school. I see TV shows like Law and Order, Boston Legal, and The Practice, and I have to admit, I’m intrigued. I’m also a big fan of books by John Grisham, particularly The Firm and The Rainmaker.

No More Television

tv snow
I didn't believe it was possible, but someone turned the TV off and never turned it back on.

I started thinking about this today because American Idol is all over the news, again. I’m almost embarrassed to admit I have never seen it. Survivor? Nope. The Apprentice? Nope. I moved back to the US in 1999, but after 9/11 I decided I didn’t want to watch television anymore. If they had the audacity to replay the scene of those planes hitting the World Trade Center over and over again, with no respect to the poor people whose friends and family had been on those planes, well then I thought television had sunk to a level of disassociation from humanity I didn’t want to be a part of anymore. So i turned it off. And I kept it off.

Pat Robertson, Ray Nagin, and Job

tv ellen degeneres swan dress
Does that mean Katrina was a lesbian hurricane, too?

Wacky invocations of God have occurred recently on the right and left, with pundits interpreting natural disasters as the voice of God. The obligatory outrage of the left against Robertson and the contempt of the right for Nagin followed in lockstep. But I think that the criticisms of the two were a bit misdirected. When Pat Robertson said that Katrina was God’s response to choosing Ellen Degeneres to host the Emmys, of course it was coarse, cruel, and stupid. When Ray Nagin said that Katrina was God’s response to the invasion of Iraq, of course it was coarse, cruel, and stupid.

Meat Your Maker

tv the biggest loser slice of meat
Click through for some facts on food adverts you might not want to know.

Y’know how there’s those food facts people gleefully let loose… things you really didn’t want to know? I’m not talking about bullshit like KFC serving rabbit, but queasy facts that put you off your dinner quicker than Channel 10’s bright idea for Monday-to-Friday primetime viewing (an Australian version of The Biggest Loser? Five nights a week? Do I really need daily updates on what flabby, wobbly, sweating, grunting hefty folk have been doing all day while I tuck into my meat and veg?)

Google & Yahoo Press Circus

tv tom cruise 2006 ces
The Consumer Electronics Show had lots of stars this year.

The CES presentation (New.com article with video) with Tom Cruise and Ellen DeGeneres was just embarrassing: a mad scientologist and a funny lesbian representing technical advancements? Gimme a break!

Email To Apple: Where Are The Housewives?

tv desperate housewives on ipod
Can't wait another nanosecond!

I'm out of the country at present, so take for instance the new episode of Desperate Housewives (season 2 episode 11, entitled "One More Kiss"). It aired, last night, at 9/8c. From London, I waited until 11/10c (around 5am here) and there was still no sight of a file that should have been available at 10/9c.

Big TV In 2005

tv amazing race scene
Some interesting results.

To the poll. I asked what the big TV "moment" of 2005 was. Voter turnout was less than in the past two polls with 6 voters this time around. I think we can blame the nature of the question for that one. The final episode of The Amazing Race 7 and ABC's memorial to Peter Jennings finished in a tie for fifth with no votes. Randal telling Trump not to hire Rebecca on The Apprentice and Tom Cruise's behviour on Oprah and The Today Show tied for third place with one vote (16% of the total) each. In a tie for first place was the episode of CSI directed by Quentin Tarantino and Kanye West's statement that "George Bush doesn't care about black people." on the NBC Katrina benefit show with two votes (33%) each.

Simon Cowell: Cruel?

tv survivor simon cowell
Good questions about Survivor and The Apprentice.

For instance, with each new episode of Survivor they soak up, aren't we teaching kids that duplicity and betrayal are character traits to be rewarded? For every gratuitous tongue-lashing they hear delivered by American Idol judge Simon Cowell, aren't we saying it's OK to be cruel? Doesn't The Apprentice tell them that cutthroat is the only way to go?

Don't fall for it, Bree!

tv desperate housewives bree van de camp
Every time we see an article on this, we have to check it out:

My favorite character on Desperate Housewives, Bree Van de Kamp, is apparently set for major alcoholism problems, as creator Marc Cherry revealed in USA Today. I guess this was bound to happen, seeing as Rex’s death and George’s death are within mere weeks of each other; add that to her already present massive neuroticism, and she just has to be looking for a way out. In some ways, using alcohol to escape doesn’t seem like a very Bree thing to do, but her behavior remains unexplained throughout these episodes, even though she is prominently featured in the most recent ones. What can I say except, “Good luck Bree”, and “Good luck Marcia Cross”?

I Love TV Marathons

tv the biggest loser
Watching, watching, watching.

Like in the last week I have seen two whole seasons of America’s Next Top Model, and an entire season of The Biggest Loser 2. And its amazing. I dont even have to be sick and couch bound to get sucked in, if Im just flipping through channels and see one odds are four hours later I will still be sitting there…Like the time Kim and I and a few other folks watched the entire episode of Boy meets Boy, and tried to predict which ones were gay and which ones were straight…
