Pat Robertson, Ray Nagin, and Job
Wacky invocations of God have occurred recently on the right and left, with pundits interpreting natural disasters as the voice of God. The obligatory outrage of the left against Robertson and the contempt of the right for Nagin followed in lockstep. But I think that the criticisms of the two were a bit misdirected. When Pat Robertson said that Katrina was God’s response to choosing Ellen Degeneres to host the Emmys, of course it was coarse, cruel, and stupid. When Ray Nagin said that Katrina was God’s response to the invasion of Iraq, of course it was coarse, cruel, and stupid.
